Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based approach to therapy that helps people make sense of reactions that can feel automatic or hard to control. We all have different internal responses that show up in certain situations, often shaped by earlier experiences. IFS helps you understand why those responses developed and what they’re trying to do for you. Instead of labeling these reactions as problems, IFS focuses on understanding them, healing the wounds at the source of the reactions, and helping you feel more steady and in control in your day-to-day life.
For example, if someone makes a comment that you perceive as critical, you may feel attacked, and as a result, you may shut down. With IFS, you may learn that the part of you that shuts down is protecting you from further hurt, More importantly, you can get curious about events from your past when criticism felt overwhelming, unsafe, or tied to rejection. From there, you can gently turn toward the younger, more vulnerable place that originally learned to brace for that kind of pain. By helping that part feel understood, supported, and no longer alone with those experiences, your nervous system no longer needs the same protective reactions.
As those old wounds are resolved, present-day situations feel less intense, making it easier to respond rather than react. This leads to greater emotional balance, a stronger sense of internal leadership, and meaningful, lasting change rather than short-term coping.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) offers a way to find rapid relief from painful memories and trauma without having to relive the events. Unlike traditional talk therapy, ART uses eye movements and Voluntary Memory/Image Replacement to change the way negative images are stored in the brain. As a result, traumas and difficult life experiences no longer provoke strong emotions or physical reactions. Best of all, clients don't have to talk about their traumas or painful experiences in order for the therapy to work.
At 180 Counseling, we use ART to treat depression, anxiety, grief, PTSD, relationship issues, victimization, poor self image, codependency and more. ART is also incredibly effective to treat first responders, military personnel, and health care workers who have experienced occupational traumas. Most clients experience healing and resolution in 1-5 sessions.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a type of therapy that helps individuals heal from emotional distress caused by traumatic experiences. During an EMDR session, the therapist guides the client through specific eye movements while focusing on the distressing memory or event. This trauma-informed intervention helps to reprocess the negative emotions and beliefs associated with the memory, leading to a reduction in symptoms and an increase in emotional resilience.
EMDR has been shown to be effective in treating a range of issues, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and addiction.
